Nine Steps to lower Risk of Dementia

A new report in The Lancet suggests that we can reduce the risk of dementia by as much as 35%. There are some simple but powerful actions we can take now to help us be in the best possible shape as we get older.

Here is a list of 9 with a bonus :

  1. MOVE MORE. Increasing your heart rate improves blood flow to the brain. You don’t need hours in the gym to reap the benefits.
  2. INCREASE CURIOSITY AND WONDER. No need for degrees. Instead, develop a lifelong desire to learn new skill sets that challenge your intellect. Find what you love and deepen your interests.
  3. QUIT SMOKING. If you are still smoking, take the steps needed to stop. It’s not too late to reap the benefits.
  4. UNDERSTAND YOUR RISK FOR HEART DISEASE. What happens in your heart affects your brain. The other way around is also true. Check your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers. Reduce inflammation and belly fat.
  5. WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT. And wear a helmet if you are riding your bike. Concussions have consequences.
  6. EAT REAL FOOD. Avoid food that is processed, has added sugars, and ingredients you can’t pronounce. Eat more fish and nuts. Olive oil and dark green veggies are your friends.
  7. SLEEP. If you’ve been killing and stealing all day, it may be hard to sleep well at night. Understand that the way you live your waking life will impact your sleep. Look at the whole of your life and figure out ways to align your life with your heart’s deep desire and intentions. Develop a sleep routine that makes sense and lets you wind down hours before hitting the sack.
  8. MEET PEOPLE. But not necessarily in social media. Go out with friends. Go to mosque, temple or church or all three. Celebrate life with others. Do things that involve others and that serve a greater purpose than just yourself.
  9. RISK WONDER AND DELIGHT. Live wholeheartedly. Give yourself to yourself completely and without reservation. Accept yourself unconditionally. This is the foundation to letting go of fear and anxiety and developing greater trust in yourself and greater gratitude for the whole of your being.

BONUS. Last and not least, join us! Our mission is to live and love life with strength and courage. If you are reading this and nodding in agreement, we are your tribe.
