Exercise and the Brain

Having lost my mom to dementia a couple of years ago, I have been interested in the power of lifestyle changes in prevention. Recently there have been numerous studies pointing to the role of exercise and brain function. Last month a new study clarifies the optimal form of exercise training for cognitive health.

resistance training

Interestingly, it looks like strength training twice a week at about 80% of peak strength. That’s it! Dr. Yorgi Mavros, the lead author of the SMART Study  (Study of Mental and Resistance Training) summarizes the findings in one sentence:

“The stronger people became, the greater the benefit for their brain.”

We may not completely stave off the genetic and environmental conditions that may lead to dementia and Alzheimer’s, but we can surely do everything in our power to be as healthy and optimal now, understanding that doing so has great benefit for the future.

If you have been putting off resistance training, stress reduction (yoga), and embracing an overall healthier lifestyle, don’t hesitate to contact us and join us for one of our many offerings. Now is a good time.
